Eco-Friendly Plaque Signs

March 13, 2012

Due to an ever-growing push for sustainable forests, “green-friendly” plaques have become a developing trend throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia. While the need for sustainable forests is clear, the solutions are often overlooked.

One viable alternative to wood is bamboo. Many people aren’t aware of this, but bamboo isn’t actually a tree. In fact, it’s a member of the grass family of plants, and as a result, it bears similar growth characteristics to its lawn-mown cousins. In fact, a bamboo shoot can attain its full height and maturity within 3-5 years of its planting. With that level of growth, bamboo is a much more sustainable material than wood for making wood-like products, including plaques.

Another healthy alternative to wooden material lies in medium density fiberboard. Unlike the wood that comes from slow-growing (and hard to replace) forests and tree farms, MDF is comprised almost exclusively with 100% recycled wood fiber, a by-product of many industrial processes. By using recycled fiberboard, sign-makers can create as many products as they need, and still fulfill their personal commitment to green sustainability.
